Helping arthritis sufferers
move forward

Fostering Health & IndependenceThe numbers are staggering. In Kansas over 407,000 people suffer from some form of arthritis and nearly 21 million nationwide. There are over one hundred different kinds of arthritis and it is the number one crippling disease in the nation.

Thanks to the Arthritis Foundation, Kansas Chapter, a United Way–funded agency, 72-year-old Opel Hoffman was able to receive help that literally got her out of bed.

Hoffman suffers from osteo-arthritis, the oldest and most common form of arthritis affecting the joints. Since July 1999 she has had four knee surgeries; her left knee was replaced only to have the replacement removed. Hoffman now has a rod in her left leg, from the hip to ankle, which keeps her leg completely straight.

"The only part I can move on my leg is my ankle. I can’t even get up from a chair or couch because my leg is stiff," said Hoffman.

That is where the Arthritis Foundation made a difference. Deanna Garrison, program director, heard about Opel’s situation from Betty Fiel, an agency volunteer and Hoffman’s friend.

"Betty let us know that Opel was staying in bed and had been for some time after her surgery. That can often lead to more trouble," said Garrison.

According to Garrison most of the agency’s programs are partially funded by United Way of the Plains, including the Loan Closet program.

It was through this program that the Arthritis Foundation was able to get Hoffman a special lift chair. The chair, which can cost anywhere between $600 – $700, basically "lifts" her up and puts her in a standing position.

Hoffman is grateful for the loan of the chair.

"They (Arthritis Foundation) are great. If it wasn’t for them I would be stuck in my bedroom in bed," said Hoffman.

Before her surgeries Hoffman was a volunteer for the Arthritis Foundation.

"Opel used to help us around the office. She would stuff envelopes, make informational packets and help with large mailings," said Garrison. "I was thrilled we could help her out."

Hoffman plans to continue volunteering in spite of the crippling effects of her arthritis.

"I did whatever they asked me to, whatever needed to be done. I’ll be back there soon helping out."
